Professor Schneier earned his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and a master’s and Ph.D from Claremont Graduate School. He taught at Johns Hopkins and Princeton universities as assistant professor from 1964 to 1968. In 1972, Schneier became an associate professor at City College of New York. He become a full professor in 1993 and a professor emeritus in 2002. His lectureships and consultancies include the Peace Corps, the New York State Assembly Internship Committee, NBC News Elections and several lobbying groups. He also acted as executive director to the Fund for Higher Education Research. Schneier received Fulbright Fellowships in Iceland in 1988 and Indonesia in 2001 to 2002. He was also a Brookings Institute Fellow from 1963 to 1964.

In addition, he received a National Endowment for the Humanities Research Fellowship in 1979 and a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Fellowship in 1996. Schneier’s scholarly writings include “Moslem Democracy: Government, Politics and Religion in Indonesia and Turkey” and “New York Politics: A Tale of Two States.” His other publications include “Legislative Strategy” (1995) and “Crafting Constitutional Democracies” (2007). He served as president of the Roeliff-Jansen Community Library from 2004 to 2010 and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. Schneier lives in Copake with his wife, Margrit, a C-GCC alumna. Other officers installed during Monday’s board meeting were William Haltermann, vice chairman, and Peter O’Hara, secretary.

He currently serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees at SUNY Columbia-Greene Community College.
